Admin I’m confused, please help! English is my third language. My question is: What’s the difference between pullet, chick, chicken, cockerel, hen, and a rooster? Names of the same bird specy confused me a lot, resulting to misomer.
Jason Hamaan Admin The differences are in terms age/gender. But non-native English speaking countries often they referred all as fowl. So here are the differences: Chicken: The general term for the species as a whole. This includes both male and female adults. Egg : Can be unhatched bird. In Chicken egg, it’s an unhatched chick which is still in broiding processes. Chick: Just like “Chicken” this is a term for the species as a whole, both male and female. But this term is for a young males and females that haven’t reached adulthood yet. Hen: This term is for an adult female chicken that’s of breeding age. Pullet: This is a young female chicken that has not reached adulthood yet. Basically pullets haven’t reached the age where they start laying eggs. The pullet age is the age between young female chick and hen. In regards to feed they take at pullet stage, they need a grower or grower-mesh. Rooster: An adult male chicken. These are the ones that crow, generally, early in the morning. (Like mine, he starts at like 4am. My neighbors aren’t too happy lol) Cockerel: A young male chicken that has not reached adulthood yet.
