Perhaps in ancient times it would last, because in ancient times, people were superstitious, and rulers had used that opportunity to contain people. Superstitious beliefs that a ruler is god’s representative. Defying a ruler means defying God. Turning back against a ruler means turning back against God. Thereby, creating a ruler with absolute power!
However, in modern times, dictatorship won’t last long as people are enlightened to know the differences between right and wrong, reality and superstitions.
After 13 years of civil war, the 53-year rule of the Assad family just ended on 8th December 2024 as rebel forces seized Syria’s capital city, Damascus, and Assad fled to Russia. The event shocked the world, who thought Assad would stay in power for life. This proves dictatorship won’t last.
Why Dictatorships Won’t Last Long?
Throughout history, humans have been compelled to do or not do something that they want. By the way, science proves humans are freewill creatures and so want freedom to live the life they want and will struggle to break loose any obstructions to that freedom!
That being said, the harder a human is compelled to do or not do things, the harder the resistance.
History tells us resistance creates more resistance. As the gap between ruler and follower deepens and widens, resistance becomes a powerful revolutionary force. Revolution brings change.
